KATE GIBB

Saturday, March 22nd marks the release of a new series of Stussy Customade tees by the British silk screen artist, Kate Gibb. Taking classic hip hop inspired photography, Kate created four unique prints that were made into t-shirts.

KATE GIBB- I've always had a strong relationship with colour and this is often what I'm known for in my artwork. If the colour is right, the rest will follow. I notice and collect things because of their colour. It forms a big part of my memory. The kind of silk screen printing I'm inspired by relies on chance, hiccups and accidents to provide the individual qualities that make up each piece. This is what keeps it exciting, a process to be continually explored and played with. Work is play to me for the majority of my time, the rest it's a great way to make a living. I consider myself to be extremely lucky.

KATE GIBB- Originally, I studied Textiles at Middlesex University and having graduated decided to focus on the development of the Silkscreen process on paper, rather than fabric. Whilst completing a part time MA at Central St Martins, I received my first music commission for the band Mono. Since this first campaign, music has presented itself as a major outlet for my work. I've thoroughly enjoyed making artwork for The Chemical Brothers, Simian, Bob Marley, My Computer, The Magic Numbers and most recently Sonny J.

KATE GIBB- Other recent commissions include seventeen covers for the re-issue of the H. G. Wells' back catalogue commissioned by Penguin Books. Advertising work has seen me collaborate with design groups here in the UK, Europe, America and Japan. These have included Saatchi & Saatchi, Fallon, JWT, 72&Sunny (LA), Stoique (Tokyo), MCBD, St Lukes, Village Green, Tappin Gofton and most recently No Days Off. I have also worked with fashion brands Dries Van Noten, Levis, Lee and Adidas.

KATE GIBB- In February 2003, I visited Japan to attend a group show at Parco, Tokyo. I returned a year later for my first solo show at the Depot Gallery. Then in September 2004, I had my first solo show at Pentagram Gallery, here in London. I am hoping to return to Tokyo this year with a new collaborative show. Currently I am concentrating less on the commercial side of things and am working towards selling limited edition silk screens, online. An ambition I have held for many years is to have my own studio shop. It would be amazing to achieve it.
