For Stussy X Marvel – The Special Edition Artist Series, UK Artist David Shrigley chose to draw The Incredible Hulk. We caught up with David to talk to him briefly about having to read comic books in secret. David’s Hulk will be released May 6th as part of the Stussy x Marvel – The Special Edition Artist Series at Stussy.com, Stussy Chapter Stores and other selected retailers.

1) Did you grow up reading comic books? If so, which were some of your favorites?

I wasn’t really allowed to read comic books as a kid, because my parents are fundamental Christians and they considered them unwholesome.
As a result I had to buy and read my comics in secret. Of the mainstream characters, Hulk and Spiderman were probably my favorites, but I was also really into horror; Tales From The Crypt and stuff like that, I guess because those titles were totally forbidden by my parents.

2) Why did you choose the Incredible Hulk as your character?

I was always going to choose The Hulk. He appeals on a metaphorical level; a character ‘doomed’ to be a superhero, at the mercy of his affliction, but also of his emotions.

3) Have comic books influenced your art?

I was never a comic book nerd. I got really into art when I was a teenager, so my heros were Marcel Duchamp and Andy Warhol rather than comic book creators. Nonetheless comics in general have always fascinated me on a very basic visual level, as a means of telling a story. I love the graphic devices that comics employ; the way that words and pictures are combined.

4) Have you ever toyed with the idea of creating a comic book?

I’ve never made a comic book as such, but I do like the idea. Whether anyone would want to read it is another matter.

5) If you had a super power, what would it be?

Being able to be invisible at certain times would be useful.
