The Stussy Make Beats Contest is about the fun of modern music making and invites everyone to upload their original tracks for a chance to win some big prizes. We had many great submissions to the SoundCloud Stussy Make Beats Contest page and wanted to interview some of our favorite beat makers to see how they got started, what equipment they currently use and what they feel makes a good beat. Name: Nosaj Thing

First beat made: First beat I made was in ’99 and it was made on an MPC2000 with some records I dug up. The beat didn’t end up anywhere… I didn’t put anything out until 2006. Lots of tracks in the archives.

Current setup: Ableton, Logic, NI Komplete, Nord G2, OP-1, Moog Voyager and a few more synths.

What makes a good beat: It has to come out naturally. Don’t follow guidelines.

Favorite beat makers: Neptunes, Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada, Dre, Dilla, Dntel, Hudmo, Flylo, Jamie xx, Mount Kimbie, Joker, Daedelus, Q-tip, Lorn… too many.

Favorite beat that wasn’t yours: 1nce Again by A Tribe Called Quest.

Favorite beat of yours: Yet to be made.
